IHHAAC MISSION

To form an organization of residents, property owners, and other interested parties adjacent to or within the environs of Indian Head Highway from the District of Columbia south to and including the town of Indian Head, Maryland.

To promote the orderly development of the communities in the said area in accordance with the low-density residential character suggested for the area by the General Plan for Montgomery and Prince George's Counties.

To preserve the limited-access, high-speed features of Indian Head Highway

To take necessary action relative to fostering the objectives of the Corporation, which in addition to the foregoing include, but are not limited to long-range developmental planning; review and analysis of proposed zoning; promotion of park, recreational and beautification projects; adequate water, sewerage, and refuse disposal capacity; improvement of the Indian Head Highway facility in general; protection of the integrity of communities and their associated individual property rights; and such other matters as may be of interest to the corporation.

Why Join the IHHAAC?

The Indian Head Highway Area Action Council has a long and honored history of working to maintain and improve the quality of life in south county. Here are just a few selections from the past year:

  • We facilitated dictionary distribution with the District IV Police Citizens’ Advisory Council, businesses, private individuals and civic groups to over 1600-3rd graders within this area.

  • We funded the dictionaries for students at the John Hanson Montessori School in Oxon Hill and joined with the Greater Accokeek Civic Association in funding dictionaries to the Henry G. Ferguson Elementary School.

  • We participated in the charrette for the proposed Henson Creek-South Potomac Master Plan and Sectional Map Amendment.

  • We testified on development projects before the Planning Board, making constructive suggestions for improvement in the plans.

  • We also opposed several of the projects because we believe public safety infrastructure is not there to support them.

  • We supported consumer legislation intended to improve real estate contracts.

  • We funded four prizes for the 3rd grade spelling bee held for the dictionary recipients.

Currently, we are:

  • Developing a strategy to deal with the issue of adequate police facilities when approving developments;

  • Continuing to research and pursue the idea of a Potomac historic corridor;

  • Investigating procedures for addressing illegal and unsightly signage in the corridor;

  • Reviewing the issue of staffing the proposed District VII police facility;

  • Routinely providing via email a significant amount of information to the community on issues and projects that concern them, e.g., updates on Oxon Hill Manor, Oxon Hill Library, Accokeek Library, crime alerts, Liquor Board hearings, reconstruction of Hwy. 210, etc;

  • We are pleased to introduce Sylvia Jones, our new Code Enforcement/Property Standards chairwoman and Scott Merritt, the new Legislative Review chairman. We thank them for their willingness to help and look forward to having another productive year.

We invite you to come and meet us and share your concerns at our annual meeting on Tuesday, October 24, at 7 P.M. The meeting will be held at the Accokeek Fire Department, on Livingston Road (one mile west of Indian Head Highway).

If you believe:

  • in these positions;

  • that we can make a difference in working on these issues;

  • in being pro-active instead of re-active;

Then please come together with many of your neighbors and join the Indian Head Highway Area Action Council. We believe the information we routinely provide is worth the $20 annual dues.

If you have any questions, please contact Sarah Cavitt directly via email or calling (301) 839-4764. Send written responses to IHHAAC, P.O. Box 44013, Fort Washington, Maryland 20749

We believe we have appropriately represented you, your interests and the community. Therefore, we ask for your support by joining our organization.
