LAUREL, MD (Dec. 27, 2009): Today the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission(WSSC), in consultation with the Maryland Department of Environment and the Prince George's County Health Department, has issued a precautionary Boil Water Advisory for parts of southern Prince George's County along the Potomac River. There has been a significant loss of water pressure for an extended period of time in the area generally defined on the north by Capital Beltway, on the south by Farmington Road to the east by Indian Head Highway and the west by the Potomac River. Also affected is a small area east of Indian Head Highway along Old Musket Lane and Gunpowder drive.

An interactive map of the Boil Water Advisory area can be found at http://www01.wsscwater.com/emap/ . Residents can enter their address in the map to determine if they are affected by the Boil Water Advisory.

The precautionary Boil Water Advisory has been issued because of a large water main break in the vicinity of 7711 Wilson Way in Fort Washington, MD.

There is NO indication at this time that the water system has been contaminated in the affected area. However, the advisory was issued as a precaution because when water systems lose pressure, there is an increased risk of contamination.

If you live in the affected area, you should bring your water to a rolling boil for one minute and cool before using for drinking, food preparation, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and washing hands. Showering is okay. Drinking water for pets should be brought to a rolling boil and then cooled for their use.

The precautionary Boil Water Advisory will continue until further notice. It will be lifted when acceptable water quality is confirmed by testing. WSSC expects this process to take at least three days to complete.

WSSC asks people in the affected area to share this information with their neighbors and anyone else who uses water in this area.

For more information, visit WSSC's Web site at www.wsscwater.com or contact WSSC's Communications and Community Relations Department at (301) 206-8100 or via e-mail at communications at wsscwater.com.
