Accokeek Foundation Announces New Children's Summer Programs, Partnership
with National Children's Museum

The Accokeek Foundation has formalized a partnership with the National
Children's Museum (NCM), and will be collaborating on two new summer
programs for children.

The mission of the NCM is to inspire children to care about and improve the
world. Interactive exhibits and programs will be at the core of the
experience, but NCM is changing the concept of a traditional museum by
becoming a catalyst for a national movement to inspire and empower kids to
speak up and take action. NCM is currently operating as a Museum Without
Walls, participating in a variety of community events and working with other
arts and cultural organizations, such as the Accokeek Foundation, to serve
kids and families.

"We are thrilled to be working with the National Children's Museum. The
National Children's Museum has a wealth of experience working with
children," says Lisa Hayes, Manager of Museum Education for the Accokeek
Foundation.

Colonial Ways and Days is a week-long workshop starting July 7th, for
children six to ten years old. Through art, drama and hands-on experiences,
children will experience what life was like for the children of an ordinary
tobacco planter. The week will culminate in a living history performance,
with the children performing their colonial characters. The cost is $225 for
Members of the Foundation or the NCM, $250 for Non-Members. Registration
deadline is June 25th.

The Summer Explorers Program offers camps and other children's groups a
unique experience. Combining a guided trail walk with a visit to the
National Colonial Farm, children will experience the land and history of
this very special site on the Potomac River. Explorer programs can be booked
Wednesdays through Fridays from June 25th through August 1st. The suggested
donation is $3.50 per child.

Founded fifty years ago to protect the view across the Potomac River from
Mount Vernon, the Accokeek Foundation, an educational non-profit, became one
of the nation's first land trusts. Today, the Foundation stewards 200 acres
of Piscataway National Park in Accokeek, Maryland, where visitors can hike a
network of trails winding through wetlands, visit a native tree arboretum,
and observe an award-winning forest restoration project. To emphasize the
connection between nature and history, part of the site includes the
National Colonial Farm, a living history museum that depicts a Maryland
middle-class family farm on the eve of the American Revolution. Nearly
extinct historic crops and animals are preserved here for future
generations. The Foundation's organic Ecosystem Farm emphasizes the future
of agriculture as organic farmers learn the tools of a new trade, practice
sustainable use of natural resources, and shares of the farms produce are
sold to households in the community. The park's beautiful grounds, trails
and programs are open to the public year round.
