Accokeek Foundation Announces August Gardening Classes

The Accokeek Foundation is pleased to offer several new gardening workshops
for adults and children this summer. The workshops are affordable and will
benefit gardeners of all ages and levels of experience.

Xeriscaping: Drought Tolerant Landscaping

Saturday, August 16, 2008, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
$15.00 Non-Members, $10.00 Members
Registration Deadline is August 14.

If you are looking for a garden that is drought tolerant, heat tolerant, and
low maintenance, look no further. This is the perfect solution for the
homeowner that wants a beautiful, stress free garden. Join Esther Mitchell,
Prince George's Master Gardener Coordinator, to learn about how you can have
a blooming garden in the middle of summer, attract birds and butterflies,
and decrease your mowing area!

Insects in Your Garden: Friend or Foe?

Wednesday, August 20, 2008, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
$15.00 Non-Members, $10.00 Members
Registration Deadline August 14, 2008.

If your garden is turning into an insect extravaganza and you are unsure
whether to worry or rejoice, this is the class for you. Pam King,
Entomologist and Senior Agent of the Agriculture and Natural Resources
Department at the University of Maryland, will show you how to begin the
identification process. We will become familiar with insects commonly found
in Maryland gardens and talk about ways to battle pests. The class includes
a tour of the Museum Garden.

Nature Nuts

3rd Tuesday of each month, 11:00 a.m.-Noon

April through October, Registration Required

$6.00 Non-Members, $5.00 Members, Ages 3-5

This fun-filled hour of exploration at the Museum Garden is the perfect
setting to learn about the wonders of nature. Designed for children ages
3-5, the children will hear a story, create a craft project, and go on an
outdoor adventure. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Each month has
a different theme, such as Rain Gardens or Farm Day.

Founded fifty years ago to protect the view across the Potomac River from
Mount Vernon, the Accokeek Foundation, an educational non-profit, became one
of the nation's first land trusts. Today, the Foundation stewards 200 acres
of Piscataway National Park in Accokeek, Maryland, where visitors can hike a
network of trails winding through wetlands, visit a native tree arboretum,
and observe an award-winning forest restoration project. To emphasize the
connection between nature and history, part of the site includes the
National Colonial Farm, a living history museum that depicts a Maryland
middle-class family farm on the eve of the American Revolution. Nearly
extinct historic crops and animals are preserved here for future
generations. The Foundation's organic Ecosystem Farm emphasizes the future
of agriculture as organic farmers learn the tools of a new trade, practice
sustainable use of natural resources, and shares of the farms produce are
sold to households in the community. The park's beautiful grounds, trails
and programs are open to the public year round.
